Representative of healing, cornrows have a historical connection in which they were worn by slaves to store grains as a means of survival and even create various hair patterns to depict escape routes from the South. In the present day, cornrows are still worn with pride as a mark of cultural preservation and strength. The blue sun and scheme of the woman represents the sorrows of history and how it has a deep impression on the Black female identity. It is also adorned in red beads to represent that blood connection. The yellow sun rising from behind the women represents renewal. Lined in blue beads, there is the idea that sorrow will always be present, but following is a new beginning.
