There is something to be said about how mothers can be very influential to their daughters starting when they are young. As a little girl, the first role model could be the mother figure in their life. Taking into account the girls that grew up without a mother, there might have been other women figures that have influenced their lives. As a black woman, there are many trials to endure through life whether it be from racism or finding an overall sense of identity in a world that is not always on our side. Mother figures can oftentimes be that sense of guidance and wisdom that young girls seek. The imagery of this painting is based on that personal and loving relationship that starts from the early stages of birth. I want other black women and girls to be able to look at this piece and maybe apply it to their life and be able to appreciate that connection that they experience with their mother or important family figure.
