For this piece titled ‘Held Dear To Me’, I am representing the generational bond that is present through the identity of Black womanhood with imagery of three generations of Black women. Red-toned colors with acrylic paint represent their blood relationship. The grandmother, mother,
and daughter are all connected using the materiality of a quilt. Its use is symbolic of how their different attributes and experiences come together to make a single, shared identity. Occupying space in the canvas, the quilt represents how the act of threading and sewing together individual pieces by Black women has preserved the ancestral experiences of generations. The fabric of the quilt is fully immersive in which the women are grasping and holding it dear to them as their shared lifeline.
