Title: Holding My Place
Year: 2024 & 2025
Medium: Sewn Tapestry
Size: 12in. x 8in.
As a nod to Carrie Mae Weems and her series of photographs titled, “The Kitchen Table”, Weems was able to address the complexity of Black womanhood and assess the elemental experiences centered at “the kitchen table”. These ideas were elemental in expressing the love, growth, and the intricacy of Black women.
In conversation with her work, my piece brings into question my seat at the table as a Black female artist. It takes into account the others who have come before me and the shared conversations that continue to shape my practice. Ancestral connections and cultural memory inform my understanding of my own identity and reflect the work I create. The empty seats represent the individuals that have come before me and that will come after me, a testament to influence and communal presence.
