Medium: Sewn Tapestry, Polyfil
Size: 57in. x 69in.

Water as a foundational element of nature reflects the profound metaphor for ‘life giving’ and resilience, similar to the ever-sustaining strength of the black womanhood. Culturally, both the spiritual and functional meanings of “Wade in the Water” through hymns and directional signifiers within the underground railroad represent the transcendence of these histories to this current moment.

With these ideas in mind, the movement in which the body can express embodies the fluidity of water as its defining characteristic. Adding onto the conversation of other trailblazing Black figures within the arts, choreographer Alvin Ailey has evoked a liberation through movement. In this celebration of grace and resistance enacted through the Black identity, this piece honors the Black body and all that it has ascended.
